Chix Bubblegum Football Cards … purchased on the way to school from Dixon’s sweetshop, were impressive tall illustrated or photographic image cards, packaged with an equal size sheet of rigid pink toxic bubblegum. This was chewed into submission to the size of a ‘pink flavoured’ golf ball. Even after diligent swapping, an unhealthy amount of golf balls were masticated till either Ivor Broadis or Albert Quixall materialised to complete the set.

The magic day in every month seemed an eternities wait until the ‘Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly’ magazine fell through the letterbox – apart from an abundance of action photographs, it revealed our idols also travelled to matches on the local bus with fans and chain-smoked in the after-match communal bath. Along with the Christmas Annual, it was – and still remains – the king of sports publications.

Derek Dougan - ‘The Doog’ played for Wolves 1966 – 75. A colourful character who formed lethal partnerships with Ernie Hunt & Peter Knowles & later John Richards.

Stan Matthews - Blackpool & England wizard of the wing. ‘Seasider Stan’ - he’s painted in fragmented action in six pieces … much like the state he left most defenders.

Stuart Pearce - Nottingham Forest stalwart for 12 years. Psycho scored 63 goals from left back and gained 78 England caps

Kenny Burns - Starred during Nottingham Forest’s Euro Cup years period. Though an aggressive defender – he could also read a game.

Steve Bull MBE, legend & talisman who scored 306 goals in Wolves climb back from the old Fourth Division & capped for England when in the Third Division

Brian Clough OBE … A believer in himself and other peoples potential – who was driven by strong opinion, talent and ambition.
